Where the reports come from

Local Storm Reports that spotters, the public and officials send to the National Weather Service, collected by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet. They usually appear minutes to a few hours after a storm. They are preliminary: a report is not proof of damage at any address, hail can fall where nobody reported it, and the final NOAA record follows in about three months (the city pages show both).

Commercial hail-tracking tools for roofers add radar hail swaths and address-level estimates and cost far more. This is a simple, low-cost email alert built on the public reports.
